To support this growth, our client is seeking a Backend Engineer with strong Node.js experience. In this role, you will develop and maintain scalable backend services, APIs, and platform functionality, working closely with engineering, product, and data teams to deliver high-performance, reliable, and secure solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend applications and services using Node.js.
- Build, optimise, and manage database queries to support performance, reliability, and scalability.
- Develop and maintain secure, high-performing APIs following industry best practices.
- Troubleshoot, debug, and enhance existing backend systems and integrations.
- Write and execute automated tests to ensure code quality, stability, and reliability.
- Monitor and improve application performance through profiling, testing, and optimisation activities.
- Maintain clear technical documentation for systems, processes, and codebases.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product, engineering, data, and application teams, to deliver high-quality solutions.
- Stay current with emerging technologies and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across the wider engineering function.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong experience in backend software development using Node.js.
- Solid understanding of relational databases, including database design, optimisation, and performance tuning.
- Experience designing, building, and maintaining scalable APIs.
- Strong problem-solving, debugging, and troubleshooting skills.
- Proficiency with version control systems such as Git and experience participating in peer code reviews.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience working with Java and supporting the migration of legacy systems to modern architectures.
- Familiarity with CI/CD practices and deployment pipelines.
- Knowledge of modern API technologies and integration approaches.
- Experience with containerisation and orchestration technologies.
- Understanding of software design principles, testing methodologies, and engineering best practices.
- Exposure to cloud-native environments and scalable distributed systems.
